MIFFLINBURG ELEMENTARY HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION


MEETING NOTES


The September 12, 2006, Mifflinburg Elementary Home and School Association meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by HSA President Gayle Pletcher, who also welcomed the fifty-three attendees to this first meeting of the 2006-2007 year. Introductions were made by the new officers.

The Secretary's Report by Toni Gessner from the May 2nd, 2006 meeting was shared; APPROVED.

Treasurer Erinn Gramly reported a checking account balance of: $13,617.60 and a savings account balance of $12,880.74. APPROVED.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS, as follows, were given with a brief overview of each for new HSA members; volunteer sign ups were encouraged to take place at end of meeting:

Auditing - Paul Reeder reported the budget and balances were correct and in "excellent condition."

Book Fair -- Reva Dunkle announced children will be able to shop in the morning and then at lunch recess this year. Furthermore, she shared she was notified by Scholastic last spring the Elementary school had accumulated $12,000 in book vouchers: she proposed $6,000 be given to teachers @ $200 per class, K-4. $3,000 to the Intermediate Library and $3,000 for the Elementary School Library. APPROVED.

Block Parents (Note: to be referred to as "Stranger Awareness" from here on.) - History given on past activities by Gayle Pletcher and Reva Dunkle; future participation and evolution of committee efforts encouraged.

Box Tops - Gayle Pletcher reported on behalf of Cindie Sheesley. Any classroom collecting more than 2,000 box tops would enjoy an ice cream party.

Campbells Soup Labels - Angie Harvey shared the goal this year will be 15,000; merchandise to be picked at end of year.

Fundraising - A new committee this year, with the intention to brainstorm ideas. Gayle Pletcher explained primary fundraiser, Spellathon. Lisa DeFacis offered Teachers' assistance in correcting tests this year.

Kindergarten Picnic (evolved into) Room Parents - Rita Griffith reported she was in the process of making final assignments and was working on a note to be sent home. Invited volunteerism for those not picked this year.

Memory Book - Polly Hornig encouraged everyone to help by taking photos. Hopes for a key individual from each grade to act as a coordinator of corresponding photos.

Red Ribbon Week - Kelly Walter announced this year's observance about living a drug-free life will be 10/23-10/27. Invited members to think about being involved as new chairs will be needed in coming years.

Related Arts - Sue Ellen Spotts explained outreach; invited new coordinator to be identified for next year. Betsy Fickes shared her appreciation of parents taking an interest in the arts.

Santa's Secret Workshop - Deb Schley requested approval of budget and invited members to suggest what items should be purchased. Sign ups to help (during the first week after Thanksgiving break) were encouraged.

School Appreciation - Gayle Pletcher explained committee on behalf of Sylvia Beiler.

School Picnic - Kelly Walter invited someone to "job shadow" her in anticipation of a future chair.

Sunshine Fund (Note: to be referred to as the "Sunshine Committee" from here on.) - Gayle Pletcher outlined her hopes for this committee in intending to reach out to all affiliated with our school in times of comfort and joy.

Web Design - Tom Raymer offered his expertise in web design in getting this new committee launched.


OLD BUSINESS: Based upon last year's special fundraisers (raffle, letters of apppeal, insignia sales,) and a budget review, it was determined it would be possible to purchase new Elementary School playground equipment. Gayle Pletcher requested a motion to use $5,000 from the 2006-2007 HSA funds to initiate the purchase process from Playworld Systems, Inc. of Lewisburg. Motion made by Gretchen Becker; seconded by Donna Dreese.

NEW BUSINESS: Illustrator Night with EB Lewis was highlighted and explained by Lindsay Beck.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:17 pm.
